karibu welcome
In Tanzania there are two very distinct safari areas - the North and the South. Please see the detailed information in each section for the differences between them.

Northern Parks

  • Serengeti
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Tarangire
  • Lake Manyara

    Southern Parks

  • Selous
  • Ruaha
  • Katavi
  • Mahale

Deciding which part of the country is most appropriate for you is without a doubt the most important decision to make.

In essence, the North is more popular (and thus more crowded) but requires more driving around, no walking and must be for at least 6 nights. The South (Selous) is perfect for a shorter fly-in safari with walking and boating and can easily be combined with Ruaha for a longer safari.

    Where to go
The national parks of Tanzania offer some of the continent's best game viewing, notably in the world famous Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater. In the south of the country, Selous and Ruaha are both superb national parks which are totally unspoilt by tourism. The northern parks lend themselves to 7-8 day safaris whereas the southern parks can be visited for a shorter safari.

    When to go
Broadly speaking the times to avoid are the rainy seasons. The heavy rains fall in April, and May, and the light rains fall in November. The Migration is best viewed in the Serengeti in May-July and Jan to March

    Where to stay
Accommodation differs between the north and the south - the south is better for small owner-managed tented and thatch lodges, whereas the north tends to be better for well-established larger hotels.

    How to get there

    From Europe
We can arrange return flights from the UK. Prices cost approximately £550 including taxes rising to £750 in peak season.

From the rest of the world
We would recommend getting a cheap flight into London and flying on. Alternatively, one can find a direct flight from your home country. KLM seem to be one of the better airlines from the USA or South America, for about $1,000. Emirates seem to offer good prices from South East Asia.

    How much will it cost
Very roughly, safaris in the south cost about $300 per person per night on a full board basis, inclusive of all game viewing activities, and between $270-$350 pp/pn for a northern safari (For the north, we strongly recommend a private safari which is only slightly more expensive than a set date-departure in a minibus, and infinitely better.)

    Types of safari
Broadly speaking there are 3 types of safari.

  • A safari in a permanent tented camp or lodge - remaining based in one or two lodges for the duration of your safari, experiencing morning and afternoon game viewing activities from the lodge, (game walks, drives, game viewing by boat or balloon).
  • A mobile permanent safari - in which you visit a number of different camps and lodges as part of your safari. These locations will be combined by light aircraft (usually Cesna 172's) or by land (usually in Land Rovers or Land Cruisers). Most appropriate to Northern Tanzania
  • Classic mobile tented safari - Instead of staying at different lodges, you will stay in a temporary camp set up for you each night. The standards of these luxury mobile camping safaris can be extraordinarily high, silver service cuisine, 30 foot tents that you can easily stand in, mirrors and other furniture, an en-suite shower and loo.
