Tanzania Safari - The Northern Safari Circuit

Tanzania's Northern Circuit, (the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire) incorporates some of the finest wildlife viewing in Africa, and safaris here are memorably rewarding.

This region has a natural abundance of wildlife, and protects the migration of millions of animals each year.

How to do it depends on your personal preference; this vast area may be explored by 4x4 or as a flying circuit, staying in elegant, stylish private camping concessions, mobile camping or permanent tented camps, or lodge-based accommodation, or a combination of all of these.

Tanzania Safari - Driving Safari in the North

Historically, the massive circuit of National Parks in the North was visited on a driving route, in which you would arrive at your chosen lodge with your own vehicle, driver and guide.

This still remains the best way to experience the landscape beyond Arusha into Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater, but now there are options to fly near-direct to seasonally positioned tented camps in the midst of the Serengeti.

Tanzania Safari - Flying Safari in the North

There are increasingly more opportunities to fly in to the best of the Northern Parks. The excellent luxury lodges run by CCA, (Klein's, Grumeti, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge), may be linked on a flying circuit, or alternatively you can now track the path of the migration by flying to the closest airstrip to one of the seasonal mobile luxury tented camps, such as those run by Nomad's.

Serengeti Fly-in for the Best Tanzania Safarit

There is now the option to fly directly to distant reaches of the Serengeti for superlative safaris off the beaten track. Certain fantastic camps are well worth flying to, notably Sayari, a permanent tented camp in the idyllically unspoilt region of the Lamai Wedge in northern Serengeti.

Tanzania Safari: Where to Stay in the North

There are some fantastic options for accommodation in the north, which may be combined to create a personal itinerary to suit. All accommodation options for each region are listed on the individual location pages:
Serengeti,
Ngorongoro Crater,
Lake Manyara,
Tarangire

Tanzania Safaris - The Southern Safari Circuit

Safaris in the south of Tanzania are different in style and logistics from those in the north.

Southern and western parks and lodges generally require a 'fly-in' safari; guests fly direct to the airstrips of their chosen camps and stay for a number of days, exploring the bush with local experts.

Southern Tanzania Safaris: Defining the Regions

Southern safaris incorporate the Selous and Ruaha, whilst the more expensive Western areas are Katavi and Mahale.
Ideally itineraries combine areas in the region. These parks have less rigorous regulations than those in the North, allowing open-sided vehicles, walking the animal trails, or sailing softly along the waterways of the Selous, surrounded by birdlife, honking hippos and cranky crocs.

Southern Tanzania Safaris: Highlights

Bush breakfasts, lunches and sundowners are laid on with aplomb, and the landscapes are yours to enjoy. The lush green rivers of the Selous contrast clearly with the rolling, ancient realms of Ruaha, again vastly different from the floodplains of Katavi, or the deep and distant forests of Mahale.

Southern Tanzania Safaris: Advantages

The advantages to a safari in southern Tanzania:

  • Unlike in the North, game viewing is from open-sided vehicles.
  • Both Selous and Ruaha are fly-in destinations, so avoiding the need for the long drives that are necessary in the North.

  • Walks (and boat-based river safaris, in Selous) are permitted, which breaks the monotony of game viewing by vehicle each day and allows you to feel even closer to the action.

  • The parks of the South are much less visited than the north - you will rarely see another vehicle let alone a minibus !

  • The South is a much easier destination for a short safari.

  • The lodges in the South are much smaller and more personal than the large hotels in the North. Consequently, attention to detail is much greater, and the experience is more personal.
