An ideal location for a short, stand-alone safari (3-4 nights) or as a combination with Ruaha or the Northern Circuit. Selous offers game viewing by foot and boat as well as from open sided vehicles. A great all round destination offering a variety of safari experiences, including fishing on the Rufiji. Particularly good for birds and riverine animals, though less good for predators. The park is so large that one will almost never see tourists from other lodges. Accessible by air from Dar, Zanzibar and Arusha

Where to Stay
Unlike the northern circuit which requires staying in a number of different lodges, a visit to the Selous will be based from one lodge. Most guests stay for between 3 and 5 nights in one lodge in the Selous. Return (daily) flights from Dar or Zanzibar cost about $300 and take about 40 minutes

Mbuyuni Luxury Tented Lodge
12 large private permanent tents with their own private veranda. A very high standard of guiding, food and service. Swimming Pool and comfortable "look out" points where afternoon tea may be taken overlooking the flood plains of the Rufiji. "Fly-Camping" is a worthwhile though expensive possibility and involves walking with an armed guard into the middle of the reserve.

Sand Rivers Selous
8 large cottages open fronted onto the river. The rooms are huge and have four poster beds. A high standard of guiding, food and service. Swimming Pool and amazing views. The feel is slightly more "English dinner party scene" than at Mbuyuni. As with Mbuyuni, "Fly-Camping" is a worthwhile though expensive possibility.
